MILWAUKEE – DePaul men’s football failed to equalize against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday night and fell 1-0 in a BIG EAST bout in Milwaukee. DePaul created a handful of high quality scoring opportunities but failed to round his chances while Marquette took advantage of a corner kick in the second half.

DePaul (6-6-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) pushed the envelope offensively in the early stages and created opportunities for outside serves. Within the first five minutes, the Blue Demons had already created a great chance to score with a cross from Jack Richards to Marek Gonda. Gonda ended up just out of reach of the ball in front of goal and the Golden Eagles (6-6-1, 3-3-1 BIG EAST) cleared the danger.

In the 16th minute, Gonda had another chance, this time for a delivery from Jake Fuderer. Gonda’s attempted header was sent straight into Marquette keeper Chandler Hallwood. The Blue Demons forced Hallwood to save five in the first half, but the Blue Demons were unable to seize an opportunity and the game remained close.

Without much attack in the first 30 minutes of play, the Golden Eagles were given a vital scoring opportunity less than a minute before break. The Blue Demons were whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Marquette’s Sam Thorton had a penalty opportunity. DePaul’s Gandhi Cruz read the attempt, dived to his right, and parried Thorton’s attempt. The parade held the score from 0-0 until halftime.

After the break, both teams exchanged offensive chances and tried to get the first score. In the 57th minute, the Golden Eagles missed their third corner chance of the game. A serve in front of goal, Alex Mirsberger knocked home and gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. With the Blue Demons scoring the most chances, Marquette was one goal ahead.

With the Blue Demons waiting to react, a corner kick ended in a dangerous spot in the 60th minute. Jacob Huth hit a header out of the wood and Michael Anderson could not make firm contact with a loose ball in the penalty area. Less than 15 minutes later, a DePaul free kick was placed in a threatening area in the penalty area. However, the Golden Eagle defense dealt with the chance and cleared the danger.

Cruz made another vital save to keep DePaul within striking distance in the 80th minute. Cruz stopped a close-range chance in the penalty area after serving from a free kick. The freshman keeper’s quick reflexes kept the score at 1-0.

DePaul kept looking for the equalizer over time. A chance from Santiago Rodriguez after a slipped pass to Marek Gonda ended just on goal in the last ten minutes. DePaul’s attempts in the last few minutes remained empty and the Blue Demons could not force extra time and fell 1-0 against the Golden Eagles.
