COVID-19 Death Rate In WI Nursing Homes Doubles: Report

MILWAUKEE, WI – The COVID-19 death rate among residents in Wisconsin nursing homes doubled – from 0.05 per 100 residents to 0.11 per 100 residents – between August and September, according to an analysis by AARP.

About 20 residents of nursing homes in Wisconsin died of the corona virus at the end of the summer, the organization said. More than 2,000 people have died from the virus in nursing homes across the country.

The number of cases of nursing home staff also rose from 1.5 per 100 residents to 2.5 per 100.

About 16.5 percent of Wisconsin nursing homes have reported COVID-19 cases in the past four weeks, the organization said.

Coronavirus case rates in residents rose from 0.3 per 100 residents at the end of August to 0.9 per 100 residents, data from the organization shows.

Cases and deaths would be higher if it weren’t for the availability of COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots for eligible residents and staff, said Sam Wilson, director of AARP in Wisconsin.

Around 87.7 percent of nursing home residents in Wisconsin are fully vaccinated against the virus, data from the organization shows. About 65 percent of health workers in the country are fully vaccinated.

According to data from the Wisconsin Department of Health, people ages 80 to 89 accounted for 30.1 percent of all coronavirus deaths in Wisconsin. 40 percent of the total deaths are residents of long-term care facilities.
