Greater Green Bay Salvation Army seeks bell ringer

HOWARD, Wisconsin (WFRV) – After some of the biggest shopping days of the year: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, comes Giving Tuesday, a day when consumers are encouraged to give back.

Nicole Hanley, Marketing Coordinator for the Greater Green Bay Salvation Army, hopes people will stop donating for a red kettle while they are out on the weekend.

“We hope the people out there will hear bells and make some donations for our red kettles,” she said. “All donations that are given in Green Bay remain local here in Green Bay and support the programs and services that the Salvation Army offers locally.”

One of the most important factors in filling those red cauldrons is having someone ring the bell.

“If you can’t make a cash donation on Giving Tuesday, you may want to sign up to give time and an hour-long shift to ring the doorbell,” Hanley said.

According to Hanley, an hour of your time can help raise lots of fundraising.

“Often, when there is no ringing tone, the kettle stands still and people just walk past it or may not see it,” she said.

Nobody misses the kettle in front of Mills Fleet Farm in Howard.

David Jaegers has spent five hours a day, six days a week there for the past 12 or 13 years.

He kept the bell ringing the entire time he spoke to Local 5 during his shift on Tuesday afternoon.

The ringing of the doorbell is quite natural after all these years, but that’s not what Jaegers thinks the best thing about his shift.

“Meet the people,” he replied. “To talk to them about the Salvation Army and all that.”

That and the feeling he gets when a dollar goes into the kettle.

“Feels good,” said Jaegers.

It feels like he would recommend others to try it out.

“I would say if you can do it,” he said. “Because it would help.”
