While Madison BeerThe coronation in front of the fans will have to wait a little longer as the personal concerts return to a semblance of normality. The rising pop superstar gave thousands of them a glimpse into the possibilities of a virtual performance celebrating the release of her full-length debut album, Life Support. Instead of humming a crowd, the excitement in the moments before the show was limited to the comment section of the livestream, but the excitement was still there.

Madison Beer opened with the high drama of “The Beginning”. It appeared as a shadowy silhouette against a dim orange spotlight. The performance floor soon also lit up. The live band instrumentation soon took over and due to the good composition of the entire show, this was a rare circumstance where a live stream makes one forget that we don’t live in normal times. Livestream concerts can often be a challenge in restoring the energy to a real show, but Beer effectively delivered a compelling performance. Instead of performing in front of a crowd, Beer would occasionally cast a burning look through the camera lens.

After the live debuts of “Good in Goodbye” and “Stay Numb And Carry On” Beer jumped nimbly from track to track. On “Blue” she highlighted her devious, good vocal chops. She said a few words between tracks, although Banter isn’t really needed in a medium that relies on production and presentation. The shady greens during “Follow the White Rabbit,” one of their best songs, made the tension even higher.

Beer’s all-female backing band formed a solid rhythmic backbone for the performance, fusing an alt-rock energy with pop and classic styling. The band helped make the show feel more immediate, as opposed to a canned or over-produced performance. Beer fans clearly appreciated the singer’s performance, with a ticker of tweets and comments from excited viewers scrolling throughout the performance.

A change of outfit and the addition of a string marked half the point of the show for the ballad “Heimweh”. It’s not hard to imagine that Beer’s livestream production could be adapted for touring to get a taste of what a Madison Beer concert might look like in 2021 or ’22. Bier lay down and draped from the side of the stage during “Effortless”.

The final act of the show began with the boisterous “BOYSHIT” along with a series of flashes and laser lights. The anthemic finale was continued with the jumping “baby”. The bright, smoky haze defined the bluesy boast of “Emotional Bruises”. The show ended with a piano-loaded “Everything happens for a reason”.

If Madison Beer’s livestream show is any clue, fans will be lining up for tickets to see the reality when the time comes.
