Early data from Dane County shows racial differences in COVID vaccines

Recent Madison & Dane County’s public health data shows racial differences between those who have previously received the COVID-19 vaccine. However, health experts say this is likely due to the state’s limited eligible populations and that organizations across Dane County are working to achieve races equity.

According to the data, more than 14 percent of Dane County’s white population have been vaccinated to date, while approximately 7.4 percent of the black population, 5.4 percent of the Hispanic population, and 7.2 percent of the Asian population have been vaccinated.

Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, vice president and chief diversity officer of UW Health, said it was important to put these statistics into context because vaccines are only available to a limited population of Dane County’s residents.

Bidar-Sielaff said that given the limited nature of the vaccine, “it is difficult to reach many important conclusions at this point in time”.
