MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man was sentenced Thursday to three-and-a-half years in prison for transporting more than $5,000 in stolen goods across state lines after stealing from stores in several different states.
Ahmeeshadye Curtis, 36, was indicated in June 2020 for his role in the thefts, which included burglaries in seven states between Nov. 28 and Dec. 24, 2019. Two of the burglaries happened in Janesville in November of that year. During his trial, prosecutors shared evidence showing Curtis and his co-defendant 39-year-old Carl Carter stole cell phones, electronics and jewelry from a number of different stores.
Curtis was convicted following a four-day trial in federal court.
At sentencing, Judge James Peterson with Wisconsin’s Western District described the burglaries as “high-level property crimes,” adding that the workers at the targeted stores felt like they no longer worked in a safe place.
Peterson said Curtis’ criminal history, which included a string of thefts and a burglary in Ohio, played a role in his latest sentence. Curtis will serve his federal sentence after he’s finished serving a 30-month sentence for his Ohio crimes.
