Madison parent excited for return to school

MADISON (WKOW) – When buses drove to elementary schools in Madison, the youngest students in the district were escorted to classrooms they were not in all year.

“She could hardly contain her excitement,” said Kelly Engsberg after dropping her 6-year-old at Huegel Elementary Tuesday morning.

When her daughter realized that she was getting to know the children in her class, whom she had only seen on the computer, she was ready to show up. Engsberg was also comfortable after reviewing MMSD’s COVID plans.

“I think it’s wise, I think it’s responsible, and I’m glad they felt it was necessary enough to try, even with this school year, even if there isn’t much left. Something is better than nothing, “she said.

While the teachers discussed their concerns about safety prior to return, Superintendent Dr. Carlton Jenkins, according to Dr.

“We need to look at how science began to grow or decrease in terms of diffusion in our community, but also the social and emotional well-being of our students,” Jenkins told News Tuesday.

This includes relying on CDC guidelines and MMSD’s own medical advisors.

The district also shared instructions for families, school day expectations, and ways to prepare children for safety.

Kelly Engsberg hopes that first day is a sign that the tough year is almost over.

“I’m excited. This feels like the beginning of the end of a really shitty experience for all of us,” she told 27 News. “I’m just thrilled that it feels like we’re making progress in the right direction.”

First and second grade students can return to class in person next Tuesday. 4K kids can be back the following week. MMSD didn’t say how or when it would occur in older students.
