The Green Bay flyover becomes the canvas for a school mural

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (WBAY) – Near Howe Elementary School in downtown Green Bay, a long-awaited playground mural comes to life, brush stroke after stroke.

Appleton artist Irineo Medina began painting the mural on the pylons of the East Mason Street flyover at S. Madison St. Friday morning. The art will feature images of six Howe students selected from dozens of submissions from parents .

“It is incredibly important, especially for children, to see them and their skin color so beautifully, when that is not always the message we receive. There is also a bit of a representation in me as an artist, but yeah, I’m just trying to reflect the student body so there are quite a few ethnicities here, ”said Medina. “I think the main thing is that this is an incredibly diverse school that reflects the people who go to school here.”

Howe students will also have the opportunity to work on the painting, which will last all weekend.
