The sun sets earlier, the leaves crunch underfoot and the cold autumn winds blow.

In other words, it’s Halloween season.

The residents of the area have been busy decorating their homes and yards with all kinds of creepy creatures, and I’m here for all of that. Anything that might distract me from real world worries is very welcome.

Look for these standout local Halloween displays:

The skeletons are back at 4037 Seventh Avenue. Every year a happy group of skeletons hangs in the yard. The skeletons are often up to date (the 2020 exhibit had a COVID-19 theme, complete with Dr. Fauci and disinfectant wipes), but this year is a classic Wizard of Oz theme. Look for Dorothy and her friends, and if you’ve ever wondered what happened to the Lollipop Guild in Munchkinland … here is your answer. This display is not backlit so get there before dark.

A creepy cemetery with light and sound effects is in the front yard 5522 49th Avenue. It’s not too scary during the day, but after dark? Caution!

Coming soon: Petersons Pumpkin Patch will soon have around 160 Jack-O-Lanterns at 9210 63rd St. Dr. Kris Peterson, a local chiropractor, holds the exhibit for a different charity each year. He draws the designs on the pumpkins and volunteers help him carve them. However, while we wait for the pumpkin exhibition, the creepy courtyard is reason enough to stop by. Note: The expertly carved pumpkins are exhibited every evening at dusk from October 29th to November 1st. Donations are collected to help the Safe Harbor Humane Society.
