Wisconsin State Patrol planning aerial enforcements in Kenosha Co. this week

KENOSHA – The Wisconsin State Patrol wants you to know they are planning an air patrol along I-41/94 in Kenosha County this Thursday to make sure drivers abide by the rules.

The patrol will use a timing device known as a VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder) and highway markings to help determine how fast people are driving.

When pilots find speeders and aggressive or reckless drivers, they call units on the ground to stop traffic.

“Excessive speed contributed to a large number of fatal accidents in 2020,” Superintendent Anthony Burrell said in a statement on Wednesday. “We decide to announce such enforcement efforts to emphasize that the goal is public safety through voluntary compliance with traffic laws – not to stop or cite motorists.”

Most of the patrol’s flight missions are conducted with federal funding to aid traffic enforcement. The patrol also uses the flights to analyze data on traffic quotes, crash reports and other information, and identify highway corridors for “enforcement missions”.

The patrol linked information about their air patrols on their 2014 YouTube video.
