3 Dark Horse candidates for the final lineup

There is still a way to go before the Green Bay Packers – and every other NFL team – need to know what their final 53-man roster will look like. And the real litmus test for these fringe players hasn’t even happened yet, that’s training camp and preseason of course – these five weeks of games and practice will tell us what we need to know.

As with any other NFL team, a large part of the Green Bay Packers squad is already occupied. So when you look at which Dark Horse candidates could make a squad boost, it all depends, as always, on how well they play – performance is king – but they also need to be part of a position group with available seats.

Based on some mini-camp crackers, building this roster, and some educated guesswork, I’ve identified three players who are under the radar that fans should keep an eye out for this summer as any of them could be a big boost for the last 53-man squad.

Green Bay Packers Dark Horse Squad Candidate: CB Kabion Ento

As I just said, there is some guesswork here, and when I discuss why Kabion Ento might make it into the final Green Bay Packers lineup, it’s mostly because we haven’t seen much of him since joining the NFL in 2019. Ento was a receiver in college in Colorado but became cornerback when he joined the Packers as an undrafted rookie. Unfortunately, he missed the entire final season with an injury and has no regular season NFL snaps.

But as the old saying goes, where there is smoke, there is fire. And I think there is some smoke around Ento. For starters, he was on the Packers’ first 53-man squad last year before being placed in the IR. By adding him to the roster and then straight to IR, Ento has had the opportunity to return at some point during the season – which is proof that the Packers like what they have about him.

At last week’s minicamp, Ento got away with an interception and saw a lot of repetitions as a shooter in special teams – an important role. As with any fringe gamer, it is important that Ento shows his worth to special teams as this is where he will likely see most of his snapshots. Depending on how many cornerbacks the Packers keep on the final list, there will be at least one and possibly two spots available.
