Green Bay City Council approves Popeyes’ east side

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Green Bay is getting another Popeyes.

The Joint Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan to build a restaurant on the site of Wally’s Spot Supper Club on the east side.

The drive-thru restaurant is built on Main Street in 1979. Wally’s Spot will close its doors after 78 years in business.

The proposal was initially delayed for a traffic compatibility study. Local residents expressed concerns about traffic and noise.

The traffic study found a way to cope with longer lines during the first month of operation by setting up a temporary extension of the thoroughfare. According to the study by Traffic Analysis & Design, this would avoid spilling over to Main Street.

The study’s conclusion was that crossings “will function acceptably under the current traffic control”. The study found that some minor changes to the traffic light time could be made at the intersection of Main Street and Mason Street.

This will be the second Popeyes in Green Bay. The 1860 W Mason restaurant opened in October 2020. A traffic control was required in the first few weeks. Only the transit was open due to the COVID-19 logs. Popeyes owner SmitCo says a dining room would be open at the proposed location on the east side. They assume that this would reduce the traffic problems.
