Green Bay Packers QB working on a new deal, per report

Aaron Rodgers’ situation with the Green Bay Packers is once again the center of attention when it comes to the NFL offseason. Ian Rapoport provided the latest update Tuesday when speaking from the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.

“The entire world awaits the decision for Aaron Rodgers,” Rapoport said Monday. “Is he going to remain in Green Bay or is he going to approach the team and say, ‘I would prefer that you trade me,’ or is he going to step abc and retire? He has not announced his decision yet. However, behind the scenes I am told the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers’ representation are working on a deal. Nothing is done, but they are having discussions. They are having negotiations to have a deal hopefully for them ready to go if and when Aaron Rodgers firmly and finally decides when he wants to return.”

Rapoport then detailed what the deal for the 38-year-old, two-time reigning MVP Award winner would look like.

“In no surprise, this would be a short-term deal that would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the NFL,” Rapoport said. Of course, that is what the reigning MVP deserves and likely what he will get. Again, nothing is done, but the two sides are at least going back and forth and having discussions waiting for Rodgers to make his decision. Of course, the Packers want to do nothing to get in the way of that, but they hope and believe he’ll want to come back.”

Jeff Darlington reported Monday on SportsCenter that Rodgers was leaning towards a return to the Packers. He has guaranteed one year left remaining on his current deal.

“Based on all of my conversations over the last several weeks, whether it’s close to the Packers organization or people close to Rodgers, this still feel like the momentum is decisively leaning toward Aaron Rodgers returning to Green Bay,” Darlington said. “This goes back to the day that they hired Tom Clements as the quarterbacks coach. That was the big one here. That was the first shoe to drop, essentially saying the Packers are going to do the things that Aaron Rodgers wants to happen.

“Everybody I’ve talked to says the conversations since the end of the season have been positive and optimistic. If they get Davante Adams done, I believe there will be reassurances that Randall Cobb will be done. And of course the contract, which the Packers also are willing to adjust to make Rodgers happy. As long as this thing doesn’t go sideways, this still feels to me that Aaron Rodgers will return to the Packers.”

Rodgers finished the year completing 68.9% of his passes for 4,115 yards, 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He led the Packers to a 13-4 record and a first-round bye in the NFC Playoffs, but they were stunned at home in the divisional round by the San Francisco 49ers, 13-10.
