NASCAR Cup Series drivers share their Road America experience ahead of Sunday’s race | WFRV Local 5

(WFRV) – It took a long time, but the NASCAR Cup Series is back in Road America for the first time since 1956.

During the 65-year drought, some things stayed the same: love for NASCAR in Wisconsin and Road America’s legacy.

Thousands of NASCAR fans were out on Road America on Saturday afternoon, watching the Cup Series drivers practice before the race on Sunday.

“Oh, that’s great. I couldn’t be happier. I’m delighted that NASCAR showed up on Road America, ”said NASCAR fan Jason Tews.

Sunday’s Cup Series race will also give some Wisconsin fans a chance to see their very first NASCAR race.

The drivers were just as excited as the fans to be with Road America. Many have been looking forward to it.

“I’ve never heard anything bad about Road America. You hear so many great stories about people who race and do things here and how great the circuit was. It’s been like that since I got on board, ”says Kevin Harvick.

As unique as the route is for the drivers, it brings with it many challenges.

“For me, this is probably the toughest street course we’ll be attending this year. So it’s intense, ”says Kyle Larson.

With the race taking place on July 4th, some of the drivers are telling Local 5 that it feels right that the Cup Series would stop at Road America that day.

“The fans were obviously hungry for this type of race. It’s a great weekend to have. On independence weekend, it feels like we’ve found a new home for July 4th, ”says Brad Keselowski.

For some of these drivers in the Cup series, this is their first time in Wisconsin and some of the fans and campers made sure they had the full Wisconsin experience.

“I ran on the track last night using the road map to know where I was going and I stopped a couple of times to see some fans. I jumped over the wall and talked to them. The amount of camping here is amazing. As if there are campers everywhere “, Joey Lagano told Local 5.” I wasn’t offered a beer, but a steak. “

You never know what to see in Wisconsin, and for Martin Truex Jr., it was a staple in the state that caught his eye.

“My kind of people here in Wisconsin. Pretty cool driving past the Johnsonville plant on the way to the racetrack. Just a beautiful part of the country. I’ve seen deer driving around up here. I’m having a lot of fun, “says Martin Truex Jr.

The NASCAR Cup Series race at Road America is scheduled for 1:30 am on Sunday, July 4th.
