The new eSprinter Van: the most efficient Mercedes-Benz eVan of all time

  • The brand new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is a versatile all-rounder , with an impressive trio of efficiency, range and capacity to load.
  • Mercedes-Benz Vans is electrifying North America: For the first time, American customers can make their fleet more sustainable using local emission-free, battery-electric vans sporting the Mercedes star.
  • The cargo van variant of the brand-new eSprinter with the highest range will be available in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2023, and the launch in Europe will follow toward the end of 2023.
  • Production network expanded: The all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is expected to be produced in Charleston (South Carolina/USA) and Ludwigsfelde, Germany in the future, in addition the Mercedes-Benz factory in Dusseldorf.

Mercedes-Benz Vans is constantly electrifying all models within the model series. The brand new eSprinter is impressive in terms of efficiency, range and capacity to load, and is a true global model: Made in North America and Europe, it will further prove the claim to “Lead in Electric Drive” in around 60 countries in the coming years.

The brand new eSprinter is equipped with a multitude of technical innovations and is based on an entirely new concept that is comprised of three modules. They allow the most flexibility in the development and design of various superstructures and conversions previously only known from the conventionally powered Sprinter.

The front section, a uniformly-designed front section comprises all high-voltage components and can be combined unchanged with all vehicle variations, regardless of wheelbase and the size of the battery. The module that houses the high-voltage battery that is integrated is situated in the underbody to make space. The battery is placed between the axles in conjunction with the robust battery housing, results in the lowest center of gravity, which can have a positive influence on handling and improves driving safety. The third pillar of the modular structure is the rear component that has the rear axle that is electrically driven. Following the principle of the common parts strategy, this is used in all variations of the brand-new eSprinter. The small and powerful electric motor is built into the rear of the module.

Mercedes-Benz has invested 350 million euros in the all-new eSprinter. About 50 million euros will be invested in each of the three plants in Charleston, Dusseldorf and Ludwigsfelde to improve their production. The modular concept of the all-new eSprinter allows maximum synergies in production , and consequently, economies of scale.

Mathias Geisen, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, is convinced: “The new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter consistently follows our strategy – to be the leader in electric mobility with the most desirable vans while achieving profitable growth worldwide.”

The all-new eSprinter is flexible and efficient

The commercial launch of the all-new eSprinter will begin in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2023. It is a long cargo van with a high roof. It is equipped with the biggest battery in the market that has an usable capacity of 113 kilowatt hours. The load capacity is 488 cubic feet, and the maximum gross vehicle weight is 4.25 tons.

The electric range that is based on simulations using the WLTP cycle will be as high as 400123 kilometers (~248.5 miles). The simulated range , based on the WLTP city cycle will be as high as 500123 km (~311 miles). These ranges also make the vehicle ideal for long-distance travel.

“With the new eSprinter, we are taking the electric large van segment to a new level. The triad of efficiency, range and load capacity with simultaneous TCO optimization makes the new eSprinter the most versatile Mercedes-Benz eVan ever,” says Mathias Geisen.

HighlightsYou aren’t able to observe it on the exterior of the brand-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, but if you look at the technology used in the vehicle, as well as the cloud-based services that are part of the Mercedes me connect4 digital ecosystem, it becomes apparent that the focus is always on the added benefit to customers.

The electric powertrain (eATS)
The main elements of the eATS in the all-new eSprinter are two brand new innovations: the efficient motor and the unique rear axle that is electric Both of them are being made available for the first time on a battery- electric van made by Mercedes-Benz.

The permanent magnet synchronous motor which weighs in at 286 pounds. It is distinguished by particularly high efficiency and optimized thermal management. The motor is available in two power levels, offering 150 or 100 kilowatts of peak output, and can deliver a torque of up to 400 newton meters (~295 ft.lb. ).

High-voltage battery and charging

At launch, North American customers will receive the largest battery that is available for the Mercedes- Benz eSprinter with the capacity of 113 Kilowatt hours. Lithium/iron phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry allows the battery variants to be free of cobalt and nickel while active thermal management ensures maximum efficiency.

Like all Mercedes-Benz eVans and eSprinters, the new eSprinter is able to charge using both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The on-board charger converts the current inside the vehicle while charging AC, for instance at a Wallbox it can output up to 9.6 Kilowatts. The new eSprinter can be charged with up to 1155 kilowatts in fast-charging stations.
For customers who want to charge fast, this means charging between 10 and 80 percent of the capacity takes approximately 42 minutes for the 113 kWh battery.

Digitization and infotainment with MBUX

The brand new eSprinter also stands out with its digitization capabilities and infotainment: it comes with the cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) with the latest software generation that was previously only available to customers of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. A variety of features and features make everyday life with an electric vehicle easier for customers.

Navigation with “Electric Intelligence” ensures the highest level of planning certainty For instance, it shows the range of the vehicle in real time in relation to the current traffic conditions and the terrain of the road. It calculates also the best possible charging strategy to get to the destination as fast as feasible, or to achieve the required state of charge (SoC) at the destination. Authentication at the charging station is simple using MBUX, with payment via Mercedes me. Other highlights include increased performance, numerous personalization options, and optimizations of the “Hey Mercedes” voice control assistant.

Mercedes-Benz Vans’ strategy for electrification

Mercedes-Benz Vans has firmly anchored its ambition to lead the way in electric mobility in its plan. By introducing the Vito E-CELL, Mercedes-Benz Vans was already a pioneer in the field of locally emission-free vans in 2010. In the present, Mercedes-Benz has electrified all segments, from the small van to the mid-sized van as well as the larger van.

In the middle of the decade Mercedes-Benz Vans will be implementing the next phase of its electrification plan with VAN.EA (MB Vans Electric Architecture): From 2025 all new models will be entirely electric.
