Milwaukee police warn of ‘crime trend’: Armed robberies and car break-ins

They say individuals driving stolen Kias or Hundais are targeting drivers near downtown entertainment areas

Milwaukee police issued a safety bulletin urging community members to practice situational awareness. They say the department is seeing a crime trend of armed robberies and car break-ins near downtown entertainment areas.”There’s a lot of people talking about it, there is. And it’s sad, it truly is,” said David Nommensen, visiting downtown Sunday.Police said the hours between 4 pm to 7 pm and 11 pm until 2 am are the prime times that drivers are getting targeted. “It definitely can be a little stressful. You want to just be able to just go about your day and just, you know, park wherever you want,” said Chris Mosley, visiting downtown.Greg Kelly visited Milwaukee on Sunday for the first time with his son for a Milwaukee Bucks game. After parking, he told WISN 12 News that he hoped he would come back out to a safe car.”It’s a lot of concern. I hope my car tonight will be OK. But, yeah, that it’s not a good thing to come and visit a city like this and have that threat,” Kelly said.WISN 12 News reported on a slew of car break-ins last month when window after window was broken into blocks away from Fiserv Forum. And again earlier this month, when thieves targeted the Historic Third Ward.”A lot of the time you hear people yelling in the middle of the night, after they came back to cars that are smashed. You walk down the street after bars close and see smash, smash, smash,” said Adam Weigold, president of the Broadway Condominiums Association, on Jan. 12. The trend has some visitors to downtown Milwaukee avoiding street parking. Nommensen chose valet.”There’s break-ins and things are being stolen. It’s, you know, you come out of a nice restaurant get-together and find your car damaged and your window broken. And that’s going to ruin the entire experience, obviously ,” Nommensen said.Police recommended parking in well-lit areas with cameras, reducing distractions when walking to your car, and ensuring that valuables are not stored in your car. They also said if firearms are stored in your car, to make sure they are locked away in a lock box.
