Plans for a new COVID-19 test site near downtown Milwaukee are still on hold.

Reporting continued: Coronavirus in Wisconsin

The facility to replace the testing site at American Family Field continues to face some legal hurdles.

Kent Wainscott of WISN 12 first reported on the proposed location for this new test site.

It is located on the former emissions test site on North 25th Street and West St. Paul Avenue.

But contract negotiations between town and country have forced the delay.

The plan was still to get the test system up and running, but legal matters in the real estate transaction are taking longer than one had hoped.

When the region’s largest COVID-19 test site in the American Family Field closed last month, WISN 12 first reported on the plan to use the former vehicle emissions site west of downtown as a replacement.

An announcement seemed imminent, but a standstill in contract negotiations delayed the opening first by a week, then by two.

“We have a website that we’re very, very interested in, and we’re working out the legal ramifications or the legal nuances,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

The city plans to rent the facility from the State Department of Transportation.

But like any real estate transaction, it required a site and building inspection.

Bar exams have taken more time than health officials hoped.

The goal to open on September 27th has been postponed to October 4th and now beyond.

The city’s focus is still on this facility which COVID-19 testing site officials said last month was ideal.

“(It’s) tailor-made for what we need to do, so this is actually the perfect website for that,” said Steve Meni, director of the Milwaukee COVID-19 testing site.

It is also a critical time for a new website as test demand soars.

“We haven’t seen such a high volume of tests since last fall and into early winter 2020,” said Darren Rausch, Greenfield health officer.

The only thing currently standing in the way of the new COVID-19 test site are these legal hurdles.

“Once we’ve resolved this, we’ll make an announcement, a public announcement from the website,” Barrett said.

The Milwaukee Department of Health said it had increased staffing at its Northwest and Southside health centers to meet the additional demand for COVID-19 testing until a new testing site opens.
