MILWAUKEE – The sacked Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales is set to return to his post as the city’s chief police officer this week, the city police commission said Friday.

The commission first issued a statement saying Morales will be returning to his old job on Monday. The commission issued another statement later on Friday saying the reinstatement was postponed to Thursday to coincide with a commission meeting on that day.

The deposed Police Chief Alfonso Morales will be reinstated as Police Chief of Milwaukee City on Monday, July 12.

Morales retired in August after the commission downgraded him after rioting over racial justice protests and suspicion within the ministry.

Morales sued for damages, and Milwaukee District Judge Christopher Foley ruled in May that Morales should be reinstated on July 3 unless his attorneys and the city settled the lawsuit. Morales’ attorneys agreed to continue the settlement negotiations until Monday.

The commission said in its first statement on Friday that the department is still facing “significant internal and external challenges”.

“The (Commission) is committed to working with Mr. Morales and the community to address these challenges and increase both safety and justice in Milwaukee,” the statement said.

Morales attorney Franklyn Gimbel did not immediately respond to a message on Friday.
