David Mason selected as Howard Brown Visiting Artist-in-Residence at UW-Parkside | Local News I Racine County Eye

SOMERS, Wisconsin – In March of this year, UW-Parkside is proud to welcome David Mason as Howard Brown Visiting Artists-in-Residence.

Mr. Mason is from Kenosha and is the principal violinist with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a past student of Parkside’s Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Alvaro Garcia.

Mr. Mason began studying the viola at the age of 8 as a student of Elizabeth Tercek and later began studying with Professor Garcia. At the age of 15 he made his solo debut as first prize winner of the youth competition of the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra.

A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy High School, he received a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music in 2013. He later graduated from Yale University with a Master of Music degree while completing his PhD in Music from Boston University, David won a position in the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra and joined as a core member in 2017.

He joined the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2020 and is the only non-Japanese member in the string section. The following season, David was promoted to Principal Viola from March 2021. David currently lives in Tokyo, Japan, where he enjoys performing in many of the city’s beautiful concert halls. In the meantime, you can explore the beautiful nature and immerse yourself in the city’s food and culture.
