Madison Memorial ready to hit football field after two-year wait

MADISON (WKOW) – Now that the Madison Memorial and other member schools of the Madison Metropolitan School District are on hiatus for the entire 2020-2021 school year, they can play high school football.

Head coach Mike Harris is entering his third season as leader of the Spartans. Harris calls this season “a learning experience” for everyone, including himself. Some of his newest players haven’t played since they were seventh or eighth grade.

Harris’ senior captains make the unique hurdle. The last time they got dressed was their sophomore year. He praised her for her patience and guidance.

“[I’m] Proud of the Seniors. Not just by the responsibility they now show, but also by their ability to deal with the adversity they have been through over the past 16 months, “Harris said.

Senior Defensive Tackle Christopher Guevara immediately accepted the challenge. While he couldn’t get into the field in his junior year, he does take advantage of the advice passed on from last season’s graduates.

“They told me to play hard. Play physical soccer. Make sure you only follow the basics.” said Guevara. “I was with [my senior classmates] since fourth grade and I’ve milled with them in these fields and now we are in the big fields where my brothers play in this field. “

Senior receiver Jairus Patterson is also ready to carry the torch and has missed the day-to-day life of autumn football.

“16, 17 months is too long from the sport you love, so I’m really glad to be back,” Patterson said.

In addition to dealing with the rust, the Spartans are facing another new challenge this season. The Big 8 Conference also added non-conference games to their diaries.

Harris looks forward to the level of competition these matchups will bring.

“A no-conference competition is one that can and will give us the chance to use this as a litmus test, to try to see exactly what the kinks are that we need to find out and we don’t beat each other up.” in the conference right from the start. “

Madison Memorial will take a short road trip to Waunakee on Friday, August 20th.
