A 40-year-old man was in stable condition Thursday after being shot at the same intersection on Madison’s East Side where gunshots rang out but hit no one the night before.

The Dane County 911 Center said gunshots were reported at 300 block on North Marquette Street in Worthington Park at 8:10 p.m. Two houses near the intersection of Marquette and Hauk Streets were also hit, Lt. Paul Bauman of the Madison Police Department and the officers recovered nine cartridges.

Bauman said he doesn’t think the victim was critically injured.

Police had been at the same location 24 hours earlier after gunshots were reported at the intersection shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Police seized two cartridge cases, but no injuries or damage were reported.

It was not immediately clear whether the two shootings were related, and no suspects were identified in the shootings on Thursday, Bauman said. Police had closed Marquette south of East Washington Avenue for about two hours while they were investigating the scene.

The area, particularly the Mobil gas station in East Washington and Marquette, had been a hotspot for gunfire and other criminal activity in recent years, including a fatal shootout in the gas station parking lot in 2017.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to contact the police at 608-255-2345 or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or p3tips.com.
