Gilbert was expected to be the victor going into Tuesday night’s election, winning 82 out of 100 simulated races against Sykes as of Oct. 26, according to FiveThirtyEight. Ahead of the election, she had been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

A poll conducted among 642 likely voters from Sept. 18 through Sept. 22 found that inflation was the top concern among those polled at 41%, with a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points, according to Spectrum News 1. Sykes had said she would try to bring back a middle-class tax cut, as well as reinstate the child tax credit, while Gilbert would rein in “reckless, unsustainable spending” while also lowering taxes for small businesses, working families, and manufacturers in the state, according to Akron Beacon Journal.

The 2022 midterm elections mark the first elections since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court. Sykes stated on her election website that women have the right to make decisions about their healthcare and reproductive freedom, including abortion, birth control, and breast cancer screenings. Gilbert, on the other hand, stated on her website that she supports the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe and that she would oppose using taxpayer funds to support abortion financially if she is elected.
