A Milwaukee teenager who moved to Texas to escape the violence in 2020 was shot dead in Houston after police said he confronted an armed man who had taken hostages in a supermarket. Andrell Whitelow’s family wants to bring the boy to Milwaukee.

Whitelow and his mother moved to Texas in August 2020. His grandmother and aunt told FOX6 News that while Whitelow might have saved the lives of others on Monday evening, September 27, he didn’t deserve to be caught in the same violence his mother wanted him to flee.

A vigil was held in Houston on Tuesday evening to commemorate Whitelow, 17.

“I left Wisconsin because Milwaukee, where I come from, is very bad,” said Ladrea Lamon, Whitelow’s mother.

It was just before 10 p.m. Monday when Houston police said Al Vernon Brown, 47, walked into a grocery store in Houston’s Sunnyside neighborhood.

“Our first investigation, our suspect walked into the store with two guns, started yelling and yelling at the customers and the store clerk,” said Lt. Christopher Bruce, Houston PD.

The man ordered the door to be bolted and five customers and three employees lowered to the ground, and threatened to shoot anyone who left. Police say several people outside saw what happened and then Whitelow came in with his own gun and asked Brown to release the hostages.

“That resulted in the victim being shot,” said Lt. Bruce.

“He still doesn’t deserve that,” said Phylicia Wright, Whitelow’s aunt. “He shouldn’t try to save anyone.”

Whitelow’s aunt and grandmother in Milwaukee said Tuesday they are still trying to process the events that were a whirlwind in less than 24 hours, wishing Whitelow hadn’t gone to the store but wondered what would have happened if he hadn’t? .

“He didn’t have to do that. He didn’t have to try to help them, but he might have saved people,” Wright said.

“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Darlene Whitelow, Andrell’s grandmother. “So much is being killed, so much is being killed.”

That includes the violence Andrell Whitelow’s mother tried to protect him from in Milwaukee, which still found him more than 1,000 miles away.

Brown is charged with grievous bodily harm with a lethal weapon and is charged with the murder and aggravated assault of a police officer.

Andrell Whitelow’s family set up a GoFundMe.com account to raise enough money to bring him back to Wisconsin.
