New information was released Tuesday into the in-custody death of a man inside the Milwaukee County Jail. But the family of that man, Brieon Green, 21, still has a lot of questions. His death on June 26, 2022, brought on a series of protests and even at that time, a call for answers.”I want justice for my son. I want to know the truth, I want to know what really happened in those last We need transparency,” said Green’s mother, Laquita Dunlap, during an Aug. 6 protest.Newly released video shows Green being placed into a Milwaukee sheriff’s squad at Bradford Beach June 26, after his arrest for disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed handgun and bail jumping. An investigation showed Green strangled himself with a phone cord in a holding cell within an hour of being booked. The video from inside the jail isn’t being released, with investigators citing security concerns with public release of the jail’s inner operations.”They’re very upset that that part was not released,” the Green family’s attorney, B’Ivory Lamarr, said tuesday. “The video that obviously depicts Brieon Green, the tragic situation of the strangulation, but also and most importantly the indifference the family believes the correctional officer displayed in walking past the cell, barely looking into the cell, and then walking off.”The family and Lamarr were shown the video by the District Attorney’s Office when they were told of the decision against filing any criminal charges in the case. Lamarr said the video makes it clear that Green’s suicide could’ve been prevented.”A matter of a couple minutes could’ve prevented what this family has now to live with as just a memory,” Lamarr said. Lamarr said he and the family are exploring their next steps, which will likely include a civil case against Milwaukee County and anyone else they believe played a role in not preventing Green’s death.
MILWAUKEE —
New information was released Tuesday into the in-custody death of a man inside the Milwaukee County Jail. But the family of that man, Brieon Green, 21, still has a lot of questions.
His death on June 26, 2022, brought on a series of protests and even at that time, a call for answers.
“I want justice for my son. I want to know the truth, I want to know what really happened in those last hours of his life. We need transparency,” said Green’s mother, Laquita Dunlap, during an Aug. 6 protest.
Newly released video shows Green being placed into a Milwaukee sheriff’s squad at Bradford Beach June 26, after his arrest for disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed handgun and bail jumping.
An investigation showed Green strangled himself with a phone cord in a holding cell within an hour of being booked. The video from inside the jail isn’t being released, with investigators citing security concerns with public release of the jail’s inner operations.
“They’re very upset that that part wasn’t released,” the Green family’s attorney, B’Ivory Lamarr, said Tuesday. “The video that obviously depicts Brieon Green, the tragic situation of the strangulation, but also and most importantly the indifference the family believes the correctional officer displayed in walking past the cell, barely looking into the cell, and then walking off.”
The family and Lamarr were shown the video by the District Attorney’s Office when they were told of the decision against filing any criminal charges in the case. Lamarr said the video makes it clear that Green’s suicide could’ve been prevented.
“A matter of a couple minutes could’ve prevented what this family hath now to live with as just a memory,” Lamarr said.
Lamarr said he and the family are exploring their next steps, which will likely include a civil case against Milwaukee County and anyone else they believe played a role in not preventing Green’s death.
