Northwoods League: Late rally comes up short as Kingfish fall to Rivets in second-to-last home game | Sports

In their penultimate home game of the season, the Kenosha Kingfish saw a rally in the ninth inning on Wednesday night in a 7-6 loss in the Northwoods League to the Rockford Rivets at Simmons Field.

Kenosha was 7-3 behind and went into the bottom of ninth place but scored three runs to make it 7-6. The kingfish had the tieing run on second base and the winning run on first, but Rockford Reliever AJ Golembiewski got Matt Korman to fly left to end the game.

Eliminated in the postseason, the Kingfish fell to 18-17 in the second half, for a total of 37:32. They were supposed to host the Rivets in the home final on Thursday night, a game that ended too late to be included on Friday’s edition of the News. After that, the teams will end their NWL 2021 season in Rockford on Friday and Saturday nights, with both games starting at 6:05 p.m.

The Kokomo Jackrabbits have won the NWL’s Great Lakes East Division title and will play in a best-of-3 series against first-half champion Traverse City Pit Spitters to open the playoffs. The winner of this series plays against the winner of the best of 3 series between the champions of the first and second halves of Great Lakes West in a Great Lakes Divisional Championship matchup in one game.

From there, the Great Lakes champion plays against the Great Plains champion in the Summer Collegiate World Series with a game for the NWL title. The Kingfish won their first and so far only NWL championship in 2015.
