Construction of the Pike River Phase II streambank restoration and footbridge replacement project at Petrifying Springs Park will begin in late spring, Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser announced today.

This project is funded by a $ 1 million Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, a $ 350,000 grant from the Lake Michigan Fund, a grant of $ 50,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and shared revenue from the U.S. Department of Environment conducted Petrifying Springs Beer Garden and Limitless Adventure.

The project builds on Phase I efforts to restore stream banks and wetlands on the Pike River in Petrifying Springs in 2018. This stretch of the Pike River is the most significant stretch of public river in the greater Kenosha area and has been referred to as the green infrastructure hub in the Pike River Watershed-based plan.

“This project will restore and maintain the Pike River watershed, which will in turn feed cleaner water into Lake Michigan,” said Kreuser. “This is a win-win situation for our environment and our quality of life, which is greatly improved by the natural resources around us.”

EPA and Fund for Lake Michigan officials also praised the project.

“Thanks to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and the collaboration of our federal, state and local partners, we are clearing and restoring the Pike River watershed,” said Cheryl Newton, acting administrator of US EPA Region 5. “The EPA is proud of this to help improve this area for the Kenosha County community – especially the children who will enjoy the playground. “
