RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) — Governor Evers declared November ‘Homeless Awareness Month’ in Wisconsin.
The goal is to shine a light on the thousands of people experiencing homelessness in our state — some of whom are children.
Shelters and community need your help — now, more than ever — to combat what they call an epidemic.
There are 855 ribbons placed here — representing the number of homeless students inside the Racine Unified School District.
Those numbers showing no sign of coming down.
“The numbers are going up and what really bothers me, is the fact that we are seeing more and more families and more and more children,” said Executive Director of Halo Inc. Holly Anderle.
It’s a beginning and ongoing reality.
“It’s important to remember that we are all one paycheck away from facing homelessness,” said Anderle.
“Currently we have 30 children in shelter and those range from 11 months to 17 years,” said Anderle.
In the city and country of Racine, the number of homeless families doubles by the day.
“These numbers tell us we have some attention we need to pay in the community,” said Anderle.
Something Jeanette Fiorita, a mom who faced homelessness six years ago, knows all too well.
“You know, we are just in a nice condo, and we were comfortable, and we were sleeping in our own beds and now it’s all gone,” said Fiorita, a volunteer coordinator at Halo Inc.
Now, Fiorita works at Halo Inc. as a volunteer coordinator.
The shelter says they have close to 14 families using their program.
“People are having to choose between where they live and eating, medication, all the other things in life,” said Fiorita.
