A Racine woman is charged with operating under the influence in Mount Pleasant after a crash on Thursday April 22nd.

According to prosecutors, 50-year-old Amy Tremmel, who has multiple OWI convictions, hit a police unit on WIS-20.

A criminal complaint states that an officer was in his parked squad around 2:20 a.m. on Thursday when another vehicle hit him from behind. At this point the officer had activated his rear-facing emergency lights.

The officer approached the offending vehicle and circled driver Tremmel with signs of impairment.

Another officer arrived at the scene and noticed Tremmel’s eyes as “bloodshot” and “shiny”. Their equilibrium was unstable. She stated that, according to the complaint, she came from a bar.

After failing field sobriety tests, Tremmel found a reported BAC of 0.19 – more than double the legal limit.

Police said Tremmel was not injured. The officer whose squad was hit suffered minor injuries.

Tremmel had two previous OWI convictions, the most recent in 2011, according to court documents.

A status conference in this case is planned for July 1st.
