With over 100 years of friendship, the new young leaders of the Madison-Mayodan Recreation Center share much more than just a love of sports management.

With quick-witted banter and inside jokes, the hearts and minds of childhood friends Lee Mitchell, Le Burris and Lindsay Pegg are well coordinated. After years of improving their talents in other cities, the trio of McMichael High School alums are back home, serving as Executive Director, Maintenance & Events Coordinator, and Recreation Specialist for the M&M Recreation Center.

Mitchell joined the center in January 2018 and brought fresh and innovative ideas to the popular workout hub. Mitchell’s love of the center is also profound.

It was a place where Mitchell found not only support for his athleticism, but also a place where he could learn healthy behavior and athleticism.

“I was one of a family of six,” says Mitchell. “Because of the affordable and local sports program at the leisure center, I was able to play soccer when I was nine.”

And it’s just that kind of access that Mitchell wants to keep providing the community, he said.

“Most people never get their dream job.” said Mitchell. “But for me it has always been my dream to return home and run the leisure center. I built my career at the YMCA (Greensboro Spears) around becoming the best sports administrator I could be. And … my dream came true and I was allowed to come home and serve those who had loved and served me so generously throughout my childhood. “
