WATCH NOW: Kenosha woman has a royal connection | Local News

“I was paralyzed when I saw this in the mail,” she said. “It was shocking. The letter was more than I had imagined. “

The letter in the envelope of the Royal Mail was from Lady Susan Hussey, the Queen’s chief lady-in-waiting.

It reads: “The Queen wants me to write to you, thanking you very much for your kind message and the delightful watercolor you sent on the occasion of the death of your beloved husband to Her Majesty the Duke of Edinburgh.

“The Queen is deeply touched by the news she has received from around the world and is very grateful for your thoughtful words.

“Sincerely, Susan Hussey, lady-in-waiting”

Matthews, whose house is filled with her craft and art projects, framed and kept the royal correspondence.

Painting is a new hobby for her that she started after retiring from the Kenosha Unified School District four years ago (although she still works part-time for KUSD).

“I joined the Kenosha Senior Center,” she said. “They have all kinds of courses and I’ve always wanted to learn to paint.”

After taking a few courses in acrylic painting, Matthews pursued her real passion: watercolors.

“No courses were offered during the pandemic,” she said. At this point, she started doing online painting tutorials. “They’ll send you materials and instructions with the online courses,” she explained.
