1940-2021

Wendell A. Schenning, 80 years old from Silver Lake, WI, died on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at home with his family. He was born on November 22, 1940 in Kenosha, WI, to the late Martin J. and Louise B. (née Winke) Schenning. On November 12, 1982, Wendell married Phyllis A. Meinen. Wendell graduated from Wilmot High School in 1958 and later attended the University of Wisconsin Extension in 1959. He joined Schenning Insurance in 1960 and in 1964 bought the Agency from his mother. In 1970, Wendell founded the agency.

Wendell was a member of the Wisconsin Independent Insurance Agents Association, the Silver Lake Fire Department, the Silver Lake Rescue Squad, and Trinity Lutheran Church, Pell Lake, WI. Silver Lake once had a trade association of which they were members. Wendell was also on the advisory boards of Southport Bank and Salem Mound Cemetery.

Over the next decade, Wendell acquired a number of local insurance agencies. Wendell bought Holdorf Agency in 1966, Hansen Agency, which was part of Silver Lake Bank, George Illgas Agency in Paddock Lake in 1970 and Van Der Worth Insurance in 1989.

After 91 years and 2 generations, Schenning Insurance decided to merge their agency with the Glass Insurance Agency of Lake Geneva, WI.

Wendell was a Ford Man, BIG NASCAR fan, and a Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan, and loved traveling with friends and family. But most of all, he loved watching his grandchildren play ice hockey, baseball, and soccer.

Wendell Schenning’s family would like to thank Cheri Kimball, Lindy (née Grumbeck) Schenning, Laurie Ginter, Donna Matezevich, Dr. Bandealy, Dr. Montemurro and all the staff at the Aurora At Home Hospice.

Wendell is survived by his loving wife Phyllis; his daughters: Debra (Adrian) Langford of Bradenton, FL; Rebecca (Warren III) Jernigan of Highlands Ranch, CO; his son Michael Schenning from Kenosha, WI; his eight grandchildren: Adrian Langford, Jennifer (Justin) Merritt, Warren and Martin Jernigan, Mary, Michael, Jackson and Logan Schenning, and a great-granddaughter Payton Merritt; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended families, very good friends and customers. In addition to his parents, his brother Aldon (Myrtle) Schenning and his sister Darlene (Bill) Carr preceded him in death.

The visitation takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The burial begins on Friday, October 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, W775 Geranium Road, Genoa City, WI 53128. The burial takes place immediately in Salem Hill Cemetery, Silver Lake, WI. The arrangements were entrusted to Strand Funeral Home, 1055 Main St., Antioch, IL 60002.
