MILWAUKEE – After Christian Yelich was unavailable for a third game in a row due to an aching back, Craig Counsell, manager of Milwaukee Brewers, reached out to Travis Shaw again for the all-important third place in his batting order.

And again Shaw delivered. He racked up two hits, including his third home game of the season, and drove in two runs when the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 at American Family Field on Wednesday to claim their third straight win.

“If you run in runs in the middle of the line-up, someone has to do it, right?” Counsel said after the game.

Right now, there’s no better option on Milwaukee’s roster than Shaw. He looked exactly like the player who was a cornerstone of the Brewers’ offensive in 2017 and 18, and nothing at all like the player who bottomed out in a miserable 2019 season.

Shaw beats .297 with his 2v5 performance on Wednesday. His two RBIs increased his team lead to 12, finishing second in the National League after Tyler Naquin of the Cincinnati Reds. Shaw is also a team leader with 0.933 OPS, 0.568 slugging percentage, and three home runs.

“What Travis did has really been the big story for me so far,” said Counsel. “We ask a lot about Travis and he delivered. It meant a lot. He played brilliant defense on third base, he did runs … he was just really solid.”
