Trey Lance has a great debut with the San Francisco 49ers and pummels the Green Bay Packers

Trey Lance made a spectacular debut as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback, throwing a 76-yard touchdown pass in his brief appearance in the team’s first preseason game to speedy rookie Danny Gray that helped his team beat the Green Bay Packers 28-21.

Trey Lance made a great debut

Lance played in the first quarterback, but that was enough to show why the Niners gave the team’s offense control over Jimmy Garoppolo who was the starting quarterback last season.

Lance throw for 34 yards

Lance connected on a perfect pass to Gray that was held 34 yards in the air on San Francisco’s second possession and Gray ran the rest of the way for the touchdown. Garoppolo was only able to connect on one pass longer than this distance in the last two seasons for San Francisco.

Lance spent most of his rookie season on the bench, but by the end of the season, he was notified that he would be taking over the offense.

Jets in trouble

While management was looking for a trade for Garoppolo, who it appears they will get, after earlier, Zach Wilson appears to have suffered a severe knee injury and could be out all season for the NY Jets, where his coach, Robert Saleh, and offensive coordinator, Mike LaFleur, worked with him in San Francisco.

Lance finished 4 of 5 for 92 yards, one TD, and a perfect 158.3 rating. He also contributed one carry for 7 yards.

Jordan Love shines

For the Packers, their young kicker, Jordan Love, did not have a good night in a game in which both teams played only a handful of starters. Love threw two touchdown passes and three interceptions in two-quarters, while starter Aaron Rodgers did not see any action.

Love connected with rookie Romeo Doubs on a 33-yard TD on Green Bay’s second series and then connected on another 33-yarder to Danny Davis near halftime.

Three interceptions

But he had three interceptions among those touchdowns, including one that came off the hands of tight end Tyler Davis. Love, has only thrown 61 passes since being drafted in the first round in 2020. Tonight he completed 13 of 24 for 176 yards.

The teams then traded TD passes in the fourth quarter, with Danny Etling throwing a 22-yard pass to Amari Rodgers to give Green Bay a 21-20 lead and San Francisco answering with a 5-yard TD from Brock Purdy to Tanner Hudson.
